Calculator guide

How to use the RD Calculator

Use the RD calculator to estimate recurring deposit maturity value from fixed monthly deposits. It is the guaranteed-return counterpart to a SIP — same monthly discipline, bank interest instead of market returns.

RD calculator logic

Each month's deposit compounds monthly at the RD rate until maturity

  • Monthly deposit is the fixed amount deposited every month.
  • Rate is the RD interest rate your bank offers.
  • Real bank RDs usually compound quarterly, not monthly — this is a close illustrative approximation, not your bank's exact statement.

What is a recurring deposit calculator?

A recurring deposit (RD) locks in a fixed monthly deposit and a fixed interest rate for a chosen tenure, then pays out principal plus interest at maturity. It is one of the most common ways Indian savers build a short-term guaranteed corpus.

Unlike a SIP, the return is fixed and known upfront — there is no market risk, but also no upside beyond the notified rate.

RD vs SIP

An RD suits money you cannot afford to see shrink — an emergency fund, a short-term goal, a wedding or trip 1-3 years out. A SIP suits money with a longer horizon where market volatility has time to average out.

Many savers use both: RD for near-term certainty, SIP for long-term growth.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum RD tenure?+

Most Indian banks offer RD tenures from 6 months up to 10 years, in multiples of 3 months.

Is RD interest taxable?+

Yes. RD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, same as FD interest. TDS rules may also apply.

Is RD better than FD?+

RD suits money you don't have as a lump sum yet — it builds it up monthly. FD suits money you already have in hand. Interest rates are usually similar for the same tenure.

What happens if I miss an RD instalment?+

Most banks charge a small penalty for a missed or delayed instalment. Rules vary by bank, so check your specific RD terms.
